"Ah, here they come. Here come the babes, now, no need holding you any longer, Francie, if you've got to go. The lads will have company."

"Ah, come on, anyway, and stay," urged Jay, thoroughly happy now that he sensed Lou's uneasiness. "Can't you stay?"

"Sure, I'm staying," said Francie. She yanked off the opera-hat lid and threw it playfully at the big Canadian. "I'd like to play with a good guy for once in my life. Set 'em up, Lou, let's get going!"

Friday the thirteenth, Lou thought numbly, trying to smile, black cat cross your path, new moon over wrong shoulder. Lady Luck. Lady Bad Luck. Okay, shrug your shoulders, take it on the chin.

"Don't I get any caviar?" complained Francie reaching for the tray. Lou passed her the caviar canapes.

"Angels on toast if you ask for them, sweetheart," he said easily. That was the way. Chin up. Always leave 'em laughing.
